The legendary hockey player died last April after a battle with the disease, and the Bossy family has partnered with Lung Cancer Canada to increase support, awareness and education about screening for the disease, she said in a press release on Wednesday.
“My father had the gift of turning negative events into positive ones and most importantly, learning from them. Through this fund, we want to pay tribute to him and honor his beliefs while enabling other patients to live healthier lives longer,” said Mike Bossy’s daughter, Tanya.
The launch will take place at the UBS Arena in New York, the city where the former top scorer has spent his entire professional career, while all proceeds from the half and half of the evening will be donated to charity.
The Mike Bossy Memorial Fund was designed to support a three-pronged campaign: fight dehumanization and raise public awareness about lung cancer, encourage the launch of the Quebec Cancer Screening Program, and establish an education program for patients and physicians.
“We are extremely grateful to the Bossy family for their lung cancer awareness and support efforts. This honor is a great way to honor Mike Bossy’s legacy and address the dehumanization that is still associated with lung cancer,” said Shem Singh, director of Lung Cancer Canada.
According to the organization, 9,000 Quebecers will be diagnosed with lung cancer and 6,200 will die from it in 2023.
