Aside from the music itself, one of the most striking aspects of the 2021 Jubilee album Japanese Breakfast is the cover, which features Michelle Sauner garnished with persimmons.
“Persimmon is present in many Asian cultures as gifts that you give to people,” Zauner told Rolling Stone magazine last year. “I saw a picture of these dangling persimmons that are dried in the winter and turn into sweet dried fruits. And I really like the idea of this very bitter, hard fruit before it’s ripe – exposed and slowly ripening, getting sweeter and letting the environment influence it. It seemed to me that this is a very suitable metaphor for where I come from.
Machine Gun Kelly unveiled the cover art for his upcoming LP Mainstream Sellout on Monday. MGK and Zauner don’t have much in common – except for the tattoos – but now we can add a cover art to the circle of similarities on their Venn diagram.
Instead of persimmons, Mainstream Sellout has a bunch of purple tomatoes squashed against the wall while MGK poses with his guitar. We have already named 2021 the Year of Fruits, but we will always welcome more products.
Mainstream Sellout arrives on March 25th and so far MGK has released two pre-release singles: “Ay!” featuring Lil Wayne and “Emo Girl” with Willow. He also released the track listing, which you can check out below.
