The French head of state, Emmanuel Macron, expressed his support for a peace and security initiative with the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas. These are three pillars, Macron said this evening in Ramallah: the fight against terrorist groups, the protection of the population and the resumption of a political process. Macron said he believes the resumption of negotiations is more necessary than ever.

“In the short term, we all know the situation could get significantly worse.” France wants to work with its partners to find a way that the fight against terrorist groups like Islamic Hamas does not harm the future and the region. Addressing Abbas, Macron said: “Nothing justifies terrorist violence, and you know it.”
Compassion for victims
After the conversation with Abbas, Macron also expressed his sympathy for the victims of violence. “I think of the injured, the families who lost relatives, the civilians who today live in a situation of great despair in Gaza.” The Hamas terrorist attack on October 7 was also a catastrophe for the Palestinians.
Abbas thanked Macron for his visit and called for a ceasefire and the permanent opening of humanitarian corridors. Instead of a military solution, a political solution is needed, he also emphasized. He appealed to Macron and the international community for immediate international protection and a peace conference. Abbas made it clear that he would reject any partial solutions for the Gaza Strip.
