The video showing French President Emmanuel Macron sipping a beer in the dressing room of the Stade Toulousain on Saturday, winner of the final of the Top 14 (French Championship) in rugby, reacted on the left.
The video made the rounds on social media. We see the French President celebrating Toulouse’s win with a beer, which he drinks in one gulp, cheered on by the players.
Green MP Sandrine Rousseau denounced “toxic masculinity in political leadership” in this image.
The deputy and spokesman for the Socialist Group in the National Assembly, Arthur Delaporte, welcomed the victory of Toulouse (south-west) and expressed outrage: “A President of the Republic should not do that.”
Well done Toulouse!
But a President of the Republic should not do that.
50 years public health policy against excessive alcohol consumption, binge drinking … the message conveyed is clearly not the right one. https://t.co/T4iOolxWXO— Arthur Delaporte (@ArthurDelaporte) June 18, 2023
“50 years of public health policies against binge drinking and binge drinking… the message of the past is clearly not the right one,” he added.
Socialist Senator Laurence Rossignol also berated Mr Macron on Twitter: “A bottom-up beer? What is he trying to prove? That he’s a real guy? Virilist clichés, masculinist populism and old-fashionedness. What a ball!” she said.
