Macron proposes a global pact against poverty and climate change

“We are looking for a new consensus here in times of great danger of division, and for this we urgently need clear goals, because although we have mobilized, looking at the reality, inequalities and risks on climate issues are increasing,” he warned at Wednesday’s forum in Paris’s Palais Brongniart, where hundreds of heads of state and government will gather by tomorrow.

According to the hosting President, the dominant financial system is the result of an earlier consensus and is not evolving as fast as humanity needs.

“That’s why we’re proposing a new global financial pact, involving everyone from those on the front lines to youth and civil society,” he said.

Macron presented four principles that he thinks could characterize efforts for change, beginning with the vision that no country should be forced to choose between reducing poverty and protecting the planet.

Likewise, he defended that under the new pact, each country chooses the model it wants to follow, without assuming that there is only one.

“Let’s respect each path in an act of communion with sovereignty,” he stressed.

The French President also stressed the principles of the existence of public financing mechanisms that guarantee investments with local participation and multilateral institutions, as well as the importance of a greater contribution from the private sector.

There is a lot of liquidity and a lot of money, and while it will be difficult to completely change the system, these resources must be put at the service of the planet and greater support for developing and middle-income countries, he added.

In his speech, Macron expressed the expectation that the round tables of the summit will lead to the expected results.

The crowning glory of the forum tomorrow will be the family photo, the closing ceremony and a press conference.
