Macron’s party also announced that it would run as an “Ensemble” alliance in the June parliamentary elections with other centrist parties such as MoDem and Horizons. The French House of Commons is elected on a first-past-the-post basis. Smaller parties, therefore, often have little chance of winning electorates on their own.
The newly re-elected head of state needs a majority in the National Assembly to implement his plans. If another camp wins a majority, Macron would indeed be forced to name a prime minister from among their ranks. Frustration and disappointment over Macron’s first term will likely cost him votes in the election. In the left camp, a coalition is already forming against him, which could put him in danger.
