Madeleine Beth McCann, British, born May 12, 2003, disappeared at the age of three while on a family holiday in the Algarve, Portugal. She is the eldest daughter of cardiologist Gerry McCann and doctor Kate McCann, who are also parents to twins Sean and Amelie, who were two years old at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance.

The case happened on May 3, 2007, when the child’s parents went to the hotel restaurant for dinner and left him sleeping in the apartment with his two twin brothers and the children of a couple of friends. The adults went into the room from time to time to check on the children, and on one of these outings they noticed Madeleine’s absence.
Lines of inquiry into Madeleine’s disappearance
As soon as it was triggered, Portuguese police believed the girl woke up in the middle of the night and got lost around the resort. The police searched for the children for days but did not find them. Even Madeleine’s parents were questioned as suspects in their daughter’s disappearance, and it was only in 2018 that Portuguese authorities dropped suspicions against the couple.
After years of no progress in the Portuguese police investigation, the British authorities decided to review the entire case, and 41 people were identified as suspects.
In 2014, investigations continued and four potential suspects were interrogated, but again nothing came to fruition. In 2015, the cost of the investigation was announced by the UK: £10 million (more than R$60 million at the rate of February 23, 2023).
Finally, in 2020, German police reported that suspect Christian B could be linked to the Madeleine McCann case. Authorities believe he kidnapped and killed Madeleine. Christian B is currently in prison for drug trafficking and rape and has not yet been named for Madeleine’s disappearance. When investigated, he denied authorship of the crime.
