The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, today proposed to his counterpart of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, Mohamed Irfaan Ali, a meeting to resume the 1966 Geneva Convention, a means of resolving the territorial dispute.

“The steps your government is taking violate international law and endanger peace in the region. If your interest in peace is genuine and sincere, I propose a meeting sponsored by CARICOM (Caribbean Community) to resume the peace agreement. Geneva 1966,” Maduro said.

The Venezuelan head of state made the suggestion in his report

Maduro reiterated that the only way to resolve the dispute was the aforementioned document, which annulled the 1899 arbitration award, which was considered by Venezuela to be one of the largest expropriations that a country has ever suffered.

The President of Venezuela called on Guyana to avoid manipulation and assured that the country would become “a branch of ExxonMobil.”

“President Irfaan, do not allow ExxonMobil to lead Guyana to escalate conflict because of its illegitimate interests. “Do not allow the Southern Command to turn your country into a military base against Bolívar’s Venezuela,” he demanded.

Venezuela rejects Guyana’s decision to authorize the aforementioned US oil company to exploit natural resources in the claimed territory.
