(ANSA) – MARRAKESH, SEPTEMBER 9 – A strong earthquake occurred in Morocco at 10:45 p.m. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reported a magnitude of 6.8. The power went out in Marrakech.
There was panic throughout Morocco due to the earthquake that shook the city and the country. Initial on-site measurements confirm that the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.8 at a depth of 10 kilometers and that its epicenter was not far from the imperial city.
In Marrakesh, visible cracks have opened in the bell tower of the Catholic church in the new part of the city. Telephone lines are down and large parts of the city are still in the dark. (HANDLING).
