There was no majority in the Environment Committee to reject the reapproval of glyphosate. The proposed resolution was presented by the Social Democrats (S&D), the Greens/EFA and the European United Left/Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL).
Alexander Bernhuber, agricultural spokesman for the ÖVP in the EU Parliament, supports the scientific approach to evaluating glyphosate: “Our own European authorities have evaluated more than 2,400 studies on glyphosate and have not found sufficient reasons to speak against re-approval. I am satisfied that the majority of my colleagues in the EU Parliament were convinced by these arguments.”
The vote in the EU Environment Commission against the ban on glyphosate has an important symbolic effect for upcoming decisions in the coming weeks. At the end of November, Member States will discuss reauthorization for another ten years in a new round.
