Former US Vice President Mike Pence has officially announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election. He is challenging his former boss: Donald Trump.
Former US Vice President Mike Pence has publicly announced his candidacy for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. “I make an announcement today before God and my family that I am running for President of the United States,” he said in a video posted on Twitter on Wednesday. The 64-year-old had already submitted the necessary documents to the Federal Election Commission on Monday.
With the app, Pence is also challenging his former boss Donald Trump, who wants to run again after his 2020 defeat. Pence was his running mate from 2017 to 2021. The two have a rocky relationship — and a mixed past.
The presidential election is scheduled for November 5, 2024. An internal party primary decides who becomes the official candidate.
With his announcement, Pence is also expanding the field of Republican hopefuls. The most prominent of them, alongside Trump, are Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley. More are likely to follow. (APA/dpa)
