Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards 2024 Winners List – Live Update

Maestro, Saltburn and Barbie were the big screen winners at the 11th Annual Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Awards, held tonight at the Beverly Hilton. The full list of winners can be found below.

Netflix's “Maestro” and Amazon MGM Studios' “Saltburn” were two winners: Bradley Cooper's Leonard Bernstein photo won Best Period and/or Character Makeup and Special Makeup Effects and the Dark comic thriller “Emerald Fennell” won Best Contemporary Makeup and Best Contemporary Hair. Styling.

The mega-hit Barbie, produced by Warner Bros. and directed by Great Gerwig, won the award for Best Period and/or Character Hairstyling.

Unfortunately, none of the film winners were present to collect their trophies at the Beverly Hilton.

Since the modern MUAHS Awards began in 2014, one of the major film winners for makeup or hair has won the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling every year – except in 2022. The Oscar went to The Eyes of Tammy Faye He applied sought three awards from the guild, but went home empty-handed.

But among Sunday night's MUAHS winners, only Maestro is nominated for the makeup and hairstyling Oscar. It will compete against Golda, Oppenheimer, Poor Things and Society of the Snow.

Elvis was the big picture of the 2023 MUAHS ceremony, winning awards for both the characters' hair and makeup. “Everywhere Everywhere All at Once,” “The Whale” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” were also winners on the film side last year.

Comedian and Young Sheldon co-star Melissa Peterman was back to host the ceremony and she opened by saying, “I'm very happy to be back in this beautiful room with you wonderful people and not on the sidewalk outside.” Warner Bros. to sweat.” with a sign that reads “Will work for streaming bonuses.””

Hear hear.

The first award of the night after three career honors went to The Young and the Restless. This came after “a little mixup” where presenter Kate Linder received the wrong envelope and instead announced Y&R as the make-up prize winner. “It happened at the Oscars, it can happen here,” said co-host John Brotherton, grinning.

But Best Make-Up for Daytime was ultimately awarded to Swanthula Boulet and Dracmorda Boulet for the Boulet Brothers' “Dragula.”

The winners in the TV Limited, Miniseries or Movie for Television categories were The Morning Show (contemporary hairstyling), The Idol (contemporary makeup), The Crown (period and/or or character makeup) and “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton.” Story (period and/or character hair styling) and The Last of Us (special makeup effects).

Dancing with the Stars won the top three awards in the categories of Television Special, One Hour or More Live Program Series – for contemporary makeup, contemporary hail styling and period and/or character hair styling. But “Saturday Night Live” nullified the potential victory by winning Best Special Makeup Effects and Best Period and/or Character Makeup.

There were two more double winners tonight: the Commercial and Music Video Hairstyling and Makeup awards both went to American Horror Story: Delicate, and the Theater Hairstyling and Makeup awards went to Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The musical.

The show began with a tribute to five-time Oscar nominee Annette Bening, who received the MUAHS Distinguished Artisan award. She's back in the running for Best Actress for Nyad this year, and who better to present this tribute than the woman who portrayed her? That would be Diana Nyad, who swam from Cuba to Florida at age 64.

But unfortunately the honoree wasn't in the room to accept the award tonight – because, said Nyad, “she's at home in bed with Covid – and Warren.” [Beatty].” But she read a short speech from Bening in which he named “Julie Hewett, Enzo Angileri and the entire hair and makeup team at Nyad” and the prosthetics that worked underwater. Bening added of Nayd: “Julie Hewitt and I have worked together for 34 years and it is a collaboration that I value.”

The 2024 MUAHS Lifetime Achievement Awards went to Kevin Haney, an Oscar and Emmy-winning makeup artist best known for his work on Driving Miss Daisy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Hocus Pocus 2. He began his career on Saturday Night Live in the 1980s – including developing Jiminy Glick.

The man who played the character, Martin Short, paid tribute to “my dear friend Kevin Haney” and delivered a few solid lines. That is, “I’m doing this quickly because I kept my Uber driver waiting, and you know how testy Ron DeSantis can get”; “It's hard for me to describe how excited I am to be here tonight – because the Botox is fresh”; and “I want to make this night so memorable that even Joe Biden would remember it.”

In the video montage, Haney said, “When you've really done your job, people look and say, 'That's cool.'” Later on stage, he said, “OK, OK, I'm not going to cry — but there is “Not.” It’s a shame about that. Thank you for this extraordinary honor. I am humbled and grateful for the magnitude of what this award means – and it means a lot.”

Next, Ora T. Green, an Emmy-nominated hairstylist known for her work on Star Trek: Nemesis, Blade and Good Times, received the MUAHS Lifetime Award. Her tribute was introduced by Marla Gibbs, who highlighted Green's “outstanding contributions to the industry” and noted that her “influence extends far beyond the world of entertainment.” Her pioneering spirit has inspired generations of aspiring hairdressers, and her commitment to excellence is a testament to her passion and tenacity in the pursuit of artistic excellence.”

She then handed over to LeVar Burton, who finished the intro: “The responsibilities of a hairdresser on a production have many aspects and levels… [including] the proverbial “I have your back.” This saying describes Ora Green perfectly.”

Green, who joined IATSE Local 706 in 1977, said, “I’m so happy to be here, I can’t tell you. Because I've never had anything that just took my breath away, and it did. … I don’t want to be anywhere else.”

Michael Westmore, introduced as a “true genius of makeup artistry” – whose five-decade resume includes a record 45 Emmy nominations and from the breathtaking beauty of Elizabeth Taylor to the bloody Rocky series to the Romulans in several Star Trek series – received the group's Vanguard Award.

He did what Armin Sherman called “groundbreaking and shockingly realistic” makeup for Robert De Niro's Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull, but the Movie Academy had not yet established a regular Oscar for hair and makeup. “It is said that Raging Bull led the Academy to finally recognize the art of makeup and hair with its own award,” Sherman said.

The first Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling was awarded to “An American Werewolf” in London the following year.

Dolph Lundgren, who played Drago in Rocky IV and met Westmore while working on Masters of the Universe, made a surprise visit to present the award. A video clip paid tribute to some of Westmore's protagonists: Sylvester Stallone, William Shatner and Mask star Eric Stoltz.

“My entire career has been so wonderful,” Westmore said on stage. “My family has been so supportive and everyone in my family has done something in show business.” That would be his wife Marion Bergeson Westmore – who he called “the mother of Star Trek” – daughters McKenzie Westmore and Michele Westmore Meeks, son Michael Westmore II and brother of Marvin Westmore.

He also said that his grandfather was Winston Churchill's hairdresser in 1900 and later became the father of continuity in the film industry around 1917, which led to every studio having a hair and make-up department.

Local 706 member Angie Wells sang during the “In Memoriam” segment dedicated to the late Karl Wesson, Enoch Harold Williams IV, Sandra Zupan-Crest, Lisa Marie Rennick, James Scribner, Voni Hinkle-Vrooman, Staci J. Witt, Kathleen Lynch, Joyce Westmore, Caryl Codon, Peter Kukla, Byrd Holland, Mario Duran, Mary Kraus, Craig Smith and Susan Germaine.
