Malaysia and Thailand reopen to international tourism

More and more destinations in Asia are easing restrictions due to Covid-19

Malaysia and Thailand are beginning their international reopening for tourism as infections from Covid-19 and its variants decline.

After almost two years of closure, Malaysia has already started welcoming tourists from neighboring Asian countries such as its border with Singapore.

Before the pandemic, the Thai city of Johor received nearly 300,000 people a day by land across its border bridge.

Also, Malaysia accepts all international travelers vaccinated against Covid with no quarantine required.

According to The Straits Times, restaurants are already operating at almost 100 per cent and past midnight in preparation for Ramadan, which falls on May 2nd.

Ismail Sabri, Prime Minister of Malaysia, confirmed that around 80 percent of the population is already vaccinated.

Malaysia joins other Asian countries that have already reopened to tourism, such as Singapore, the Philippines and India.

In the case of Thailand, the country eased coronavirus restrictions on international travelers.

The country asks that instead of a negative Covid-PCR test, a maximum of 72 hours before the trip be spent in isolation.

Likewise, the tourist must take another coronavirus test on his fifth day and wait at the hotel for the result to be delivered.

Also, the Thai government announced its intention to declare Covid-19 endemic, although it will maintain its health protocols such as the use of mandatory masks.
