Man arrested after killing seven pedestrians with a car in Texas

(Portal) At least seven people were killed and others injured on Sunday when a car crashed into pedestrians in Brownsville, Texas and a male suspect was in custody, local TV stations reported.

The accident happened at 8:30 a.m. local time near the Ozanam Center, a shelter for migrants and the homeless, affiliates of CBS 4 and NBC 23 said, quoting Lt. Martin Sandoval of the Brownsville Police Department.

Some migrants were among the dead, Sandoval said in an interview with Fox News.

“We are investigating forms of intoxication to determine if he was intoxicated at the time of the accident,” said Sandoval, who described the Ozanam center as a shelter for the homeless.

Some people were also injured in the crash, but there are no other immediate details.

Video circulating online purporting to show the accident shows an SUV speeding over people sitting on a sidewalk. A second video appears to show victims lying on the ground, some bleeding and writhing while others remain motionless. Portal could not independently verify the authenticity of the videos.

The city of Brownsville, on the border with Mexico, is one of the places where an influx of migrants is expected when Covidera restrictions expire on Thursday.
