A FedEx employee saw a man snatch his truck from under his nose while he was making a delivery in Old Quebec on Wednesday. He had left the key in the ignition of the vehicle.
On Wednesday around 12:30 p.m., Quebec City police received a call from the delivery man who had just helplessly witnessed his truck being stolen. The vehicle was then parked in the area of Rue Saint-Jean, not far from the Côte de la Montagne. Patrol officers then combed the area, but without success.
But about twenty minutes later, a hit-and-run call came. We are now at Laurier Boulevard and the entrance to Laval University. The information that is given [indiquent] that the suspect truck is a FedEx truck. Police are apparently making a connection to the theft of the vehicle and will locate the vehicle heading north on Robert-Bourassa, explains Quebec police spokesman David Poitras.
Police then began pursuing the truck and turned on their flashing lights. However, the thief refused to stop the vehicle and instead continued his escape towards the Père-Lelièvre exit, where he then ran several red lights.
SPVQ police officers then lost sight of the suspect and located the truck a few minutes later on Neuvialle Boulevard, near the O'Neill House and the hiking trail along the Saint-Charles River.
The truck was stuck. The police followed the person's tracks and got to him. He was then looked after by police officers from the Sûreté du Québec, who had since joined the operation.
The man was arrested for vehicle theft, fleeing and dangerous driving. Overall, the police chase only lasted a few minutes and the police did not notice any excessive speed.
The person will be received by investigators in the next few hours and brought before the judge at a later date.
