Joaquin Ciria, 61, was found innocent by the San Francisco Superior Court in the United States last Monday, 18, after serving 32 years in prison for a crime he did not commit.
“We’re happy for Joaquin, who has fought for so long to clear his name,” said attorney Paige Kaneb. “He can now spend time with his 32yearold son, who was a baby when his father was unjustly taken from him.”
According to the broadcaster CBS, the man was convicted of shooting Felix Bastarrica in 1990. However, following investigations by the Innocence Commission, established in 2020, it was determined that the crime was committed by an acquaintance of Joaquin and the victim.
At the time, Ciria was suspected by rumors spread by the killer himself, but at the time of the crime he was home with his newborn son. Ciria has never confessed to the crime and has always maintained that he is innocent.
In addition to the acknowledgment of his innocence, he earned the right to earn $140 for each day in prison, which is about $1.6 million taxfree.
