Loren Schauders was operating a forklift when it fell off a bridge. He lost half of his body. That’s how he lives today.
September 27, 2019 fundamentally changed Loren Schauders’ life forever. The then 17-year-old was working on a construction site in Great Falls, Montana (USA), during a bridge renovation. When his boss asks him to drive the forklift, disaster takes its course. Because the young man had never learned to operate a forklift.
He is driving the forklift over the highway bridge when cars start illegally overtaking him at traffic lights. The single-lane lane is severely narrowed and when a car passes it, Schauders swerves too close to the edge of the bridge, causing the ground to collapse below him. The young worker tries to jump off the falling forklift, but his leg is caught by the seat belt, causing him to be thrown off the machine as it falls 50 feet. As the boy hits the ground, the four-ton forklift lands on top of him, crushing his body.

“There was a big chunk of muscle in my arm next to me”
As if that weren’t enough, Schauders experiences everything fully conscious. The young man has to endure unimaginable pain. “I was conscious the entire time. My eyes were wide open and I saw the forklift come down and land on my right hip and forearm. I remember looking to the right with the forklift on my body and there was a big chunk of muscle in my arm on the floor beside me. It was instantly broken by the impact.”
That the 22-year-old survived is nothing short of a miracle. Doctors saved Schauer’s life by amputating everything below his waist and half of his right arm. To everyone’s amazement, his health improved at an incredible rate. Doctors had assumed he would remain in the hospital for at least 1.5 years. In fact, after just three months, he begins his four-week rehab and then returns home.

Many followers are also wondering how Loren’s digestive system works when half of her body is missing. “I have a colostomy, which means my colon has been taken out of my body. And I have bilateral nephrostomies. These are tubes that go into my kidneys and drain my urine into a bag.”
