Man killed, woman seriously injured in ‘very brutal’ gondola accident in popular resort town: police – New York Post

A man was killed on Sunday and a woman is fighting for her life in hospital after a gondola crash at a resort in Canada.

According to the Associated Press, authorities said the two were thrown from a sightseeing gondola at Mont-Tremblant ski resort near Montreal, Quebec, when a device struck the car.

The CBC reported that Quebec police said the accident was caused by a drill, but they are not sure why the machine was operating under the nacelle and do not rule out criminal negligence.

“It was pretty bad,” Sûreté du Québec spokesman Éric Cadotte told CBC. “The nacelle was hit, part of the nacelle was ripped off and people didn’t stand a chance at all, they just fell to the ground from several meters and hit the ground hard.”

Cadotte described the impact as “very brutal” and questioned why a drill was working under the nacelles on a Sunday, CBC reported.

Both the man and woman are Ontario natives and in their 50s, Cadotte told CBC, noting the woman remains in critical condition at the hospital.

Provincial police are reportedly conducting an investigation and speaking with witnesses, including resort staff and the drill operator.

The Tremblant Resort Association said in a Facebook post that activities at the popular resort were halted after the incident.

The Tremblant Resort Association confirmed to Fox News Digital that an accident involving the third-party operated gondola and construction equipment occurred at the resort.

“It is with great regret that we confirm, following the announcement by the Sûreté du Québec, that one of the two victims has been declared deceased while the other has been taken to hospital,” a spokesman said.

“We are saddened by this situation and Station Mont Tremblant sends its sincerest condolences to everyone involved,” Annique Aird, vice president of sales, marketing and communications, said in a statement to Fox News Digital.
