After a disappointing G20 summit in Kiev, the conflict in Ukraine continued this Sunday, September 20th, with numerous tragedies. Two aid workers from a French NGO were killed by a drone strike in the Bakhmout region. Meanwhile, elections in Russia took place without tension or surprises.

Two humanitarian workers killed near Bakhmut

The tragedy would have occurred on Saturday, September 9th and only became known on Sunday. A drone attacked a humanitarian vehicle working for the French association Road to Relief. There were four people on board. Two of them were seriously injured and were evacuated. Two others died, including the Spanish Emma Igual, co-founder of the association.

Another volunteer, Thomas Tonko, of Canadian origin, was in the same vehicle and was also killed in the attack, according to sources close to the club.

Kiev accuses Russia of being behind the attack.

Ukraine claims to have reclaimed 1 km in the south

Ukraine said on Sunday that its troops had advanced more than a kilometer against the Russians on the front in the south of the country.

Regional elections without surprises

Outgoing Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, a Vladimir Putin supporter who has been in office since 2010, was re-elected on Sunday in tension-free regional elections across Russia and in the four regions of Ukraine annexed by Moscow. Since the opponents were in prison or in exile, the outcome of the votes was not tense.

The first results are due to be announced at 9 a.m. GMT (11 a.m. in France) on Monday, but Russia’s Central Election Commission said on Sunday that President Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party won regional elections in the four annexed by Moscow areas in Ukraine took first place.

Even before the first results, Kiev and its western allies had denounced these illegal elections.

Grain: Erdogan calls for not marginalizing Russia
