Margot Robbie, Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore lead the celebs at the annual Deadline Contenders event… as the actors get back into promo mode after the strike ends

Margot Robbie was joined by Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore at the star-studded Deadline Contenders event in Los Angeles this weekend.

The Hollywood heavyweights came to the DGA Theater to highlight 28 standout films from this year, with panels that allowed cast and creatives to tell honest stories about the productions.

With the actors’ strike now over, it seemed as if Tinseltown’s best and brightest were ready to dine, especially the three actresses.

Oscar nominee Robbie, 33, walked the red carpet first before leading a panel discussion with director Greta Gerwig about her blockbuster film Barbie.

She looked casually chic in a white floral oxford tied at the waist, which she paired with chic denim and matching red accessories.

“I definitely didn’t want to try to make a Puff Barbie.” “I wanted us to both tackle the scary things and celebrate the wonderful things,” Robbie said during a panel discussion. “That’s exactly why I pursued Greta.” [Gerwig]because I thought, “That’s what she would do.”‘

Robbie acquired the rights to the iconic doll through her production company LuckyChap before turning to Gerwig and her collaborator Noah Baumbach to write the script.

The couple then took Barbie and delivered the biggest opening of 2023, the biggest opening by a female director and the biggest opening for film stars Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

The film is the highest-grossing film in Warner Bros. history and the highest-grossing film ever directed by a woman.

“She literally changed the game,” Robbie said of Gerwig. “It’s different from now on because of what she did.” It’s huge.

“And someone will come up with another original idea that requires a big budget, and there will be a female lead, and they will point to Barbie and say, ‘But that made money.’ Everyone will go, ‘Oh, right, for that we have to give the green light. And that’s amazing.”

However, Gerwig downplayed her part in Barbie’s success, attributing it to a team effort.

“There’s no way we could be on stage and doing what we need to do if these women hadn’t done it,” she explained. “So don’t feel alone in this place. “I feel like there are a lot of them who have been there before and will come after.”

Meanwhile, Portman and Moore wowed in dueling red looks as they discussed their Todd Haynes-directed thriller May, December, which was inspired by the true story of sex offender teacher Mary Kay Letourneau.

“I called Todd and said, ‘I can’t do this. “It’s too hard!” Moore admitted. “I was really struggling. I ask myself, “Who is this woman?”

The film centers on a married couple who became embroiled in a scandalous love affair two decades ago, when the wife (Moore) was a teacher and the husband (Charles Melton) was an underage student.

Although their decisions have come under intense scrutiny, they have remained together over the years.

Portman plays an actress preparing to portray Moore’s character in a film.

“We’re trying to get into people’s hearts and minds, and sometimes you play people who commit crimes,” Portman said.

“That doesn’t mean you believe these crimes should be committed.” [It’s] “It’s just that we as artists are curious about the inner workings of the human heart.”
