After the Oscar nominees were announced, there was a huge scandal online, unlike previous awards shows the film by Barbie fell short with just eight nominations (a far cry from favorite Oppenheimer at 14). Although it's still competing for the Best Film statuette, the Best Actress and Best Director categories shine. the absence of Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig respectively.

The situation has become even more delicate because… Ryan Goslingwho plays Ken in the film is nominated for Best supporting actorwhich reassures fans of the film that the machismo so criticized in Barbie is also in force in the film world's most important film competition.

Despite the absence of Greta and Margot, Ryan Gosling continues to compete in the Best Supporting Actor category.

“We live in a world where Ryan Gosling is nominated for Barbie and not Margot Robbie, with Barbie being a women's film (…) the film was right,” “They messed up the meaning of Barbie because they were tired of men. “Where is Greta Gerwig? Where is Margot Robbie?”, “You tell me that Ryan Gosling was nominated for an Oscar for his role as Ken in Barbie. And Margot Robbie, who is Barbie in the truest sense of the word, was given nothing. Not to director Greta Gerwig. The jury proved the meaning of the film in the truest sense of the word. “It seems like a joke,” were some of the comments the academy’s decision generated.

The networks showed that they disagreed with the Academy's decision and made sure that the “Barbie” film denounced exactly this type of situation.

This isn't the only controversy this year's Oscar nominees have sparked when it comes to machismo. Of the 10 productions nominated for Best Picture, three are directed by a woman: Barbie Greta GerwigPast lives of Celine song and Anatomy of a Fall of Justine Triet. However, only the latter was nominated for best director because she was the only woman competing against names like Martin Scorsese, Yorgos Lanthimos, Jonathan Glazer and Christopher Nolan.

Barbie was one of the most nominated films at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. However, the majority of the statuettes went to productions like Oppenheimer and Poor Things. The categories in which the film won awards were: Best Original Song, Best Production Design, Best Box Office, Best Hair and Makeup and Best Original Screenplay.

At the Oscars, Barbie will compete in the following categories:

-Best Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling)

-Best Supporting Actress (America Ferrera)

-Best Adapted Screenplay

-Best costume design

-Best Original Song (with two song nominations for “I'm Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For?”

-Best production design

-Best movie

The film is expected to win the Oscar for best original song with one of its two nominees, which could be a historic achievement for the young Billie Eilish, who would take home her second statuette at the gala.

As already mentioned, Barbie It won previous awards in the Best Original Screenplay category and is now competing in the Best Adapted Screenplay category. This is because the Academy believed that the puppet already existed, even though the film's plot came from Gerwig's head, and therefore did not consider it a “100% original” idea.

So far, neither Greta nor Margo have commented on the controversy.
