María Isabel Rodríguez, a Salvadoran with universal projection

Many are wondering who is this representative of the Salvadoran woman who has asserted herself in a country with strong sexist content.

On November 5th, she celebrates another year of life in which her participation as a doctor, scientist, counselor, civil servant and educator will be remembered, in a life full of recognition at national and international levels, including 11 Honoris Causa at various universities in Latin America.

Born on this day in 1922 in San Salvador, Rodríguez was the country’s first woman to graduate in medicine from the University of El Salvador (UES), where she made important contributions to academic and scientific development in the country’s political sphere.

In honor of this woman, the university unveiled a sculpture in Plaza Minerva, the main entrance to the university’s central campus, next to the statue of Doctor Fabio Castillo Figueroa and other rectors before her.

Her achievements, her positions and her contributions are countless in countries such as Argentina, Peru, Brazil, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti and the United States, among others, where she served as an international official.

As Minister of Health (2009-2014), she is remembered by her compatriots for driving comprehensive health care reform for El Salvador.

Public health specialist with international focus at the Pan American Health Organization, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of El Salvador, Rector of the University of El Salvador and Minister of Health of El Salvador are facets of an achievement that has shaped her life and the life it is for today making their countrymen a source of pride.
