On July 23rd, various news were revealed about what’s to come for the Marvel Universe over the next two years. The announcements were made as part of the San Diego Comic-Con 2022 and among the novelties from Marvel was the premiere of the trailer for Wakanda Forever, a film that gives continuity to Black Panther, a film that premiered in 2018 and that has the History of the Wakanda Territory and its Inhabitants.
Although this is great news for Marvel fans and fans of the superhero Black Panther, the news that contains this film also causes a lot of emotions in Guatemalans, since the actress María Mercedes Coroy will be part of the cast and will share with other renowned actors will be like Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira or the Mexican Tenoch Huerta, with whom María Mercedes had already worked on the film Bel Canto.
According to information from Coroy’s representative office, the actress will play a young version of Namor’s mother, one of the Aquatic King figures in the Marvel Multiverse. In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, María Mercedes Coroy can be seen at the moment Namor’s mother gives birth to him in an underwater scene.
The aquatic element will play a major role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. This presented the performers with challenges that had to occur in the water. María Mercedes Coroy commented that this was the most difficult part of the shoot, especially because she had to reflect emotions and make them look real in the water. “It’s a total challenge to make sure there are no blisters coming out of your nose or mouth,” Coroy shared through his representatives.
Speaking of his new role in the amazing world of Marvel, Coroy said, “He’s one of the most distinctive characters I’ve ever had. Since most of my projects were linked to real events. (…) This character brings magic from a new universe for me”.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was directed by Ryan Coogler, who also directed the first film. María Mercedes Coroy affirms that working with Coogler has given her great satisfaction, since he has always known how the interpreter who received awards for her work in films such as “Ixcanul” or “La Llorona” by Jayro Bustamante felt felt.
Speaking of the experience with Ryan Coogler, the Guatemalan said: “I loved the way he worked, he always told me he would record until I was comfortable, he didn’t want to rush things, he had time and that gave me confidence, his way directing was a duality because he asks you what he wants to see but he also lets you suggest and he is a very laid back and easy person.”
María Mercedes Coroy confessed that her eyes filled with tears after seeing the trailer for the film, in which she appears in one of the underwater scenes. “I had a sea of emotions when I saw myself, felt my heart pounding with emotion and knew I was where I never imagined I would get. (…) the road has been long and arduous, but to see the result of a great effort fills me with joy,” said the Guatemalan Mayan Kaqchikel actress.
Regarding his preparation for the film, Coroy said that the character of Namor’s mother led him to spend a full year training in swimming and learning techniques “like apnea to wallow in the water” when the moment of birth the character is given.
The actress emphasized that her performances in the cinema are more associated with motherhood, which is very special for her. In the case of Wakanda Forever, he pointed out that it will be even more important since it is the origin of one of the most anticipated characters in the Marvel Universe.
María Mercedes Coroy assures that she has never imagined herself in a superhero movie, although she has loved watching them since childhood. “I was very impressed with the costumes and the recording set, but now that I’m there all I can say is, ‘Wow. I couldn’t have imagined having this opportunity.” And here I am with great satisfaction because I know that this career really excites me,” said the actress.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is scheduled to premiere in November 2022.
