Mariana Carrara wins best novel at the São Paulo Literary Prize

Sao Paulo

Mariana Salomão Carrara won this year’s São Paulo Literary Prize. The writer was awarded this Monday (27) as the author of the best novel for the book “Não Fossem as Sílabas do Sábado” published by the Todavia publishing house.

In the “Best Debut Novel” category, the winner went to Alexandre Aliatti and the work “Tinta Branca”, published by Patuá.

“Não Fossem as Sílabas do Sábado” was released in June last year and is about a pregnant woman who loses her partner in an accident caused by her neighbor. She deals with the pregnancy alone while caring for the nanny and the neighbor who also lost her husband at the event.

“Tinta Branca” reports on a Sunday party in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, where a group of people torture a young immigrant in the city’s central square. The case ends with a history teacher also trying to help a newly arrived man find out his origins. The two mysterious figures ultimately reveal a connection that spans this community’s past and present.

This year’s edition of the São Paulo Literary Prize was marked by the absence of the Companhia das Letras, whose entries were disqualified due to an error in the records of all their books. The problem caused an earthquake in the prize list: in 2022, 70% of the finalists in the General Romance category came from the publisher, now the largest group on the market.

This resulted in a greater diversification of the literary prize nominees in 2023. In the Best Novel category, Salomão was nominated in a category with publications from seven publishers. The Newcomer Awards highlighted works from eight publishing groups.

The São Paulo Literary Prize is currently the literary prize with the highest cash award in the country. Each of the winners will receive R$200,000 from the organization.
