Marie-France Marcotte: The ‘late career’ of a brilliant actress on the small screen

Marie-France Marcotte feels she is living a “late career” in television. The actress has multiplied supporting roles since her career began in the early 1990s, but ‘Can You Hear Me?’ changed the game, made the phone ring more and got stronger points.

Marie-France Marcotte, who was previously very active on the boards and taught theater for 20 years, had the chance to play Line, a mother who was a victim of domestic violence, in Florence Longpré’s star-studded series. The scene where Line presents herself at an organization that helps women in trouble after realizing her daughter Carolanne (Ève Landry) is in the same situation as her is heartbreakingly true and earned her a Gemini award .

In “All life” she then brilliantly defended the role of Christine, the biological mother of Tina (Hélène Bourgeois Leclerc), who lives in the dorm because of her mental problems. Again, Marie-France Marcotte had touching moments to deliver, she had to maneuver on a fine line in order not to fall into a caricature.

Since September we find her somewhere else, this time in the skin of Dominique Després, a snobbish retired lawyer, hungry for power and who we don’t want to make an enemy of. Cougar, she takes Marc-André (Éric Bruneau), who is a few years her junior, into her nets, whom she places in her unoccupied attic and with whom she sends off into the air.

It’s a treat for viewers. And with obvious pleasure, the actress embodies a villain of Dominique’s caliber “because it pulls me out of me”.

“At first she scared me. Her treacherous side, in intrigue… In fact, there are two strong women in the office, Évelyne (Karine Vanesse) and Dominique, and we feel that this tires Dominique because she has always evolved in a man’s world. Her relationship with women is special,” she told Agence QMI, hailing the writing of Éric Bruneau and Kim Lévesque Lizotte and the work of director Stéphane Lapointe in this resolutely modern series.

“Dominique is a strong woman, a strong woman who loves money and power, a charmer. Then she’s a little mysterious. Unlike the other characters, nothing is known about his personal life. Except that she lives in a ‘penthouse’ and there are men’s shirts in her closet without anyone knowing why,” the actress says with a laugh.

“For many people, money is a symbol of success, of success, as if money were the ultimate goal in life. It’s a little bit sad and it’s kind of the opposite of who I am,” she said, casually admitting to never judging her characters.
