Massimiliano Latorre is one of the two Marines of the San Marco Battalion. He was accused, along with Salvatore Girone, of killing two Kerala fishermen in India during an anti-piracy operation aboard the tanker Enrica Lexie. And today he talks about the Patrick Zaki case in an interview with Libero. After being pardoned by al-Sisi, he refused to flee from the state and the honors of the Italian government. In an interview with Antonio Rapisarda he says: “I am a soldier: unfortunately this experience opened my eyes to other aspects that were previously unknown to me. That doesn’t allow me to judge a priori without knowing the facts and protagonists.”
For Latorre, the question is simple: “I can tell you that personally I would not have made it an ideological and political issue.” I would have been guided by common sense, education, respect and, above all, gratitude. The same for which I am busy today thanking the Italians in the various cities.” Meanwhile, his and Girone’s ordeal only ended last December: full filing by the Roman magistrate: “Much remains: positive and negative.” The glass is half full. Seeing only the positive, I can say that I have the true, genuine support and affection of the people who have supported me now as then.”
Latorre concludes by saying that he does not expect anything from the Meloni government: “But I would be happy if, with your support, it would finally be possible to clarify responsibilities: not for executioner purposes, but only out of pure love of truth.” This story has no political connotation, but it is a single injustice that must not be repeated.” Some time ago, he called for maximum compensation from the state.
