It took almost 40 years to achieve this, but the first real saga with the irreplaceable Mario, the famous Italian plumber who loves mushrooms and pipes, is no longer the most popular title in the series of games starring Princess Peach’s saviors of the kingdom.
According to new data summarizing sales of the various titles in which our hero appears, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which was first released in 2017, had sold 52 million units by the end of last year – an all-time record. This statistic also proves the undeniable appeal of these racing games, in which the characters of the series compete against each other on racetracks that are often fantastic and crazy, using different weapons, upgrades and superpowers.
In second place, far behind, we find the classic of the classics, Super Mario Bros., the original title released on the original Nintendo console in 1985. This game, which has long since entered the common video game and cultural universe, solidifying the universe of the plumber, his brother Princess Peach and the notorious Bowser, has sold over 40.2 million copies.
In third place, still according to the data published this week, we find another title in the Mario Kart series: it is in fact Mario Kart Wii, released in 2008, with its 37.38 million copies sold. Then another more traditional platformer creeps in, New Super Mario Bros, released in 2006 on a less traditional platform: the DS, a touchscreen portable console (30.8 million copies). The same game, this time sold for the Wii, is the fifth best-selling title in the Mario universe with 30.32 million copies sold.
For the nostalgic, you’ll have to wait at number eight on this list (with ten) to find another title that qualifies as “classic”, namely Super Mario World, one of the flagship titles of the Super Nintendo, the console based on was released in 1990. This game, which introduced us to Yoshi in particular, sold 20.61 million copies. Shortly before that there is another racing game, Mario Kart DS, with 23.60 copies sold.
At the very bottom of the list we find the only game of the Mario Party series with its series of minigames, namely Super Mario Party, which was released on the Switch console in 2018 and has sold 18.79 million copies so far.
