A group of developers from the University of Copenhagen managed to create a form of artificial intelligence capable of creating new levels of the legendary game Super Mario Bros according to the wishes of the users.
Based on OpenAI’s GPT-2 technology, this solution has so far only been powered by data from the game “Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels” released in 1986. Despite its retro appearance, the result is bound to be quite impressive.
Maliciously dubbed MarioGPT, this artificial intelligence is still in its infancy and operates on explicit written requests. It is in fact necessary to describe exactly what you want to see appear in the layers to be created. Precise instructions must be given, such as “many pipes, many enemies, few blocks, low altitude” or vice versa “few pipes, few enemies, many blocks, high altitude” etc
Basic coding concepts
Using MarioGPT is not as easy and accessible as ChatGPT, as it requires code ideas (Python 3.8) for example. That’s why its developers have published a special guide on the GitHub platform to help you get started and create your own game levels.
According to its developers, MarioGPT is already capable of creating varied and mostly perfectly playable environments, thereby improving the quality of the game.Trained for more complex games, this type of solution is based on language models even newer than GPT-2 could be one shake up the entertainment industry one day. It would then potentially be possible to enrich the content of these games, also according to the players’ own desires.
