Marlo Thomas has gushed about her “lust” for her 43-year-old husband Phil Donahue in a candid new interview with People.
The 85-year-old “Friends” actress – who married 87-year-old TV presenter Phil in 1980 – credited her physical attraction to her husband and the ability to listen to one another to the strength of their bond.
At the Women In Media Foundation’s 48th Annual Gracie Awards Gala on Tuesday, the star said, “I call it the three L’s. Love, Listening and Lust.” Those are the three L’s.
“You have to listen and then you know what the other person is really thinking and going through.” You have to love each other. And without desire you have nothing.
“He’s the best, I’m very lucky.”

The couple recently celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary on May 21 and Marlo shared how the couple celebrated the milestone.
She said, “Well, it was just fun to be alone.” Sometimes we’d throw parties and do things, but this year we just felt like we just wanted to hang out by ourselves.
‘Go to the theatre, go to dinner, walk down the street, just be together.’ It was great.’
In 2021, the duo discussed working together after decades as husband and wife on their podcast, Double Dates.
Marlo and Phil, who quietly married in 1980, explained to Drew that they made a conscious effort to keep their relationship out of the headlines and that it was one of the secrets to maintaining their romance.
‘We came back [from our honeymoon] We were asked to co-host the Emmys, People’s Choice, and be on the cover of People magazine, and it was a bit overwhelming, and we looked at each other and said, ‘Let’s not do that. If we stay out of it, maybe folks will leave us alone,” explained Thomas, who played Jennifer Aniston’s mother on Friends.
The That Girl star went on to explain that they were focused on their relationship rather than their public persona and have vowed not to work together. Recently, however, that has changed.
“When I first got the idea of doing the book and the podcast, Phil said, ‘I’m going, but I won’t talk about our marriage,’ but when we got to these double dates, people started talking about their jealousy. “Mark Consuelos, who is married to Kelly Ripa, spoke about his jealousy, so Phil spoke about his jealousy,” she continued.

“They talked about fights, we talked about fights. They talked about spending money, so we talked about everything they talked about. It was a real double date and it was fun and I learned about Phil and he learned about me. “We learned to work together,” she said.
Adding, “We had never worked together because we were always afraid we were going to kill each other because we’re both Type A’s and we’re both kind of bossy and so we felt like we weren’t going to make it , but after 40 years we made it.” .’
Phil chimed in, “Yeah, after 40 years we’re here and you know I get to say a few things every now and then.”
