Mars or Manhattan? Bushfire smoke envelops New York

Last update: 06/08/2023 – 20:09

Smoke from several severe wildfires in Canada engulfed parts of the US east coast and caused the worst air quality in decades in the metropolis of New York. Plumes from hundreds of wildfires across eastern Canada moved southward and led to a dense, hazy veil and temporary orange tint of the sky in New York, among other places. “Mars or Manhattan?” wrote one Twitter user and posted a photo of the skyline, including the Empire State Building. A burning smell hung in the air, could be felt in the throat and eyes and gave a headache.
