As a reminder, Martha herself once wrote that she had a mini “ark” on her estate in Bedford, New York. Throughout her life she has claimed to own “at least 20 cats, 25 dogs, 10 chinchillas, dozens of canaries and parakeets, two ponies, three donkeys, 10 horses, many sheep and goats, hundreds of chickens, geese, turkeys, guinea.” Poultry, quail, peacocks and carrier pigeons.”

However, something incredibly sad happened. Over the weekend, Martha posted on Instagram that her Persian kitten, Princess Peony, was accidentally killed by her four dogs who “mistook her for an intruder.”

Martha also posted a photo of a crew digging a grave for Princess Peony and wrote: “[B]about the beautiful and unusual Princess Peony. [T]Mistaking her for an intruder, the four dogs killed her defenseless little self. [I] will miss her very much. RIP beauty.”

According to Martha’s website, Princess Peony and her sister Empress Tang were born on May 11, 2009. Later that year they moved in with Martha.

Chatting with the Today Show last year, Martha spoke fondly of Peony, Tang and their recently adopted kitten, Blackie. She described the siblings as “beautiful,” “very special,” and “players.”

“There are pet waiting lists because people have really found that pets are a great comfort, a great addition to the home,” she added. “It’s wonderful that your children have the responsibility to take care of something else. All of that is just endemic to me in this pandemic. It’s a wonderful thing that pets have become more loved.”

Thinking of you at this difficult time, Martha!
