A 54-year-old woman was stabbed to death this Sunday in Le Lamentin, in central Martinique. For once, the alleged killer was apprehended by the victim’s neighbors.

These, who immediately called the police, managed to arrest the suspect themselves before handing him over to the authorities. According to prosecutors, the man is not the victim’s companion.
“A possessive childhood friend”
Upon arrival, paramedics found the victim had multiple stab wounds. The suspect is said to have used a cutlass, a type of machete traditionally used to cut sugar cane.
According to Radio Caraïbes International, the victim’s name is Marijo and she is an “elderly caretaker”. It is the victim’s companion, worried about having no more news, who would have contacted the neighbors for them to intervene.
Still, according to the same source, the alleged killer would be “a very possessive and jealous childhood friend who wanted to control his life and his dates.”
“Given the increase in violence [en Martinique], what role does violence against women play in our policy proposals? None!” lamented the Federation of Women’s Union in Martinique in a press release.
This is the first murder of a woman recorded on the island since the beginning of the year. A total of nineteen homicides were recorded in Martinique in 2022. According to the We All association, it would be the 82nd femicide of the year in France.
