Neighbors in a New York City neighborhood in Brooklyn are fed up with their trees being destroyed, while an ax criminal has reportedly cut down more than a dozen trees in the area since August.
“It’s annoying – it’s meanness. This is intentional. We can all see it. This person is looking for attention. “She’s bored, she’s angry, she’s attacking something vulnerable,” lamented landscape gardener Rigel Ferrin, a longtime resident of the neighborhood, according to the New York Post on Wednesday.
Since August, the Greenpoint neighborhood has been on alert after noticing three freshly planted seedlings in Sender Park had been broken in half, leaving volunteer gardeners “destroyed” by the vandalism, Elissa said. Iberti, president of the volunteer Friends of Sender Park group, told the NY Post.
Shortly afterwards, according to American media, several more trees were sawed in half just three blocks north of the park.
The carnage was repeated again in late September when a large trunk tree was sawed in two in the same area. And last week, two more suffered the same fate, the NY Post observed.
“The blade marking looks very, very thin and I think someone would hear it if we used something with a real engine,” a stunned Friends of Transmitter Park board member Julie Gamble told the media outlet.
But beyond the vandalism, some consider the situation “disturbing” as there is likely a person walking through the neighborhood “at night with an ax,” according to one of the volunteers, Stephanie Gregory.
The Parks Department was well aware of the problem and had sent requests for photos, videos and witness statements to local mailboxes to “identify those responsible for this tree murder,” he told local media.
The problem of tree felling has received a lot of attention recently with the felling of a famous tree in Sycamore Gap in the United Kingdom last week, which was featured in the Robin Hood film. A man was arrested in the case.
