Mathew Barzal was slapped on the wrist by the National Hockey League’s player safety department on Sunday.
The New York Islanders forward was fined $5,000 for hitting Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Tony DeAngelo in the face with a stick on Saturday. This is the maximum amount allowed under the players’ collective agreement.
The incident occurred in the second period. During the sequence, Barzal received a minor penalty for high stick.
