Maureen Lipman, 76, will take a short break from Coronation Street to resume the role in the West End

Coronation Street star Maureen Lipman is set to take a short break from the long-running soap to reprise a role in the West End.

The veteran actress, 76, who portrays beloved grandmother Evelyn in the soap, will take four weeks off from the iconic show to stage production of Rose.

A representative from ITV and Coronation Street told Web that Maureen is not leaving the show but is taking a short month-long hiatus for production, which begins on May 23.

A source told The Sun: “Maureen will be taking a short break from the cobblestones to star in the play – but she’ll be back,” a source told the publication.

Rose will be giving a total of 28 performances at the Ambassador’s Theatre.

The publications report that Maureen recently signed on for another year with the soap, on which she portrays grandmother Evelyn.

Maureen has previously starred as Rose during the online pandemic and some subsequent shows, but said she’s looking forward to portraying the character again.

Rose “tells the story of a woman who leaves Nazi-occupied Europe to make a new life for herself in America.”

She said in a recent statement: “I’m delighted to bench Rose back for a limited run with the Ambassadors in May.”

“I thought I would never have the strength to revisit Martin Sherman’s mystical, magical, deeply philosophical and hilariously funny creation, but Rose is in my blood and she needs to be revived.”

Screenwriter Martin Sherman added, “Maureen Lipman’s performance as Rose is the greatest gift a playwright could ever dream of.”

“Performance might be the wrong word; she inhabits the role, the woman, the space, the language, the times, the events.’

Maureen is an iconic actress who has had a number of television and stage roles over the years.

She was previously a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theater Company.

One of her most iconic roles was as Aunt Eller in the National Theater’s Oklahoma!

She joined Coronation Street in 2018.
