That’s suboptimal

Max Fried avoided a very unlucky defense on opening day. Fried gave up a run in the second inning when Orlando Arcia and Austin Riley had two games to evade them. However, he could not avoid injury in the fourth inning.
Dominic Smith groundballed Matt Olson and Fried covered. Max made the game with no problems. However, he went back to the hill and grabbed his Achilles tendon. The coaching staff was alerted and had a warm-up pitch. After that, he didn’t want anything to do with returning to the game and gave the ball away.
The Braves later announced that Fried had left the game with a left thigh condition.
Of course, we don’t know the severity, but this appears to put his next scheduled launch in jeopardy. Teams carry extra pitchers to start the year for a reason. But regardless, that doesn’t bode well for a Cy Young contestant who’s flown through spring. We will update as needed.
