Amélie Beyries and Maxime Le Flaguais have been friends for almost 30 years and this is not their first musical collaboration. “Maxime had already written me the song J'aura cent ans, which is on my first album Landing, and Nous suis, which is on my second album Encounter. In addition, he is the one who wrote the lyrics of Au-père des mots, which is part of the soundtrack for the first season of the show La vérité nature. So we should tackle a real project together.”
Two heads, one album
That's why the long-time friends began writing sessions together in 2018. “Over the last few years we've really taken the time to think about this album and ask ourselves what we wanted to express. Maxime and I share several common interests in the fields of psychology, history and philosophy. Our curiosity helps us a lot when generating materials. Furthermore, the trust I have in him has allowed me to venture into areas that I would not have ventured into with others. It was a really interesting challenge.”
While she composes the music and he the lyrics, “Du feu dans les lilas” ultimately turns out to be a happy mix of songs, sometimes touching one more than the other. “There are lyrics that are more personal to me and others and more connected to Maxime. For example, the song “Du temps” is about me having to think about what I need to improve about myself. On Maxime's page there is the song Momzie, which is a tribute to his grandmother, who lived through the war in France. There is also the song Le Phare, which is about death and is associated with his father Michel Côté.
Famous employees
Beyries is also happy to have recorded his album with some of his idols. “On this album is the song Derrière le jour, whose music was composed by the Israeli artist Idan Raichel, with whom I have collaborated in the past, and which I sing in a duet with Albin de la Simone. I've been a fan of the latter for a long time and thanks to director Joseph Marchand, one of his friends, Albin agreed to come to Montreal to record the album with us. I couldn't believe I had the chance to work with him! In addition, the album was mixed in Paris with Jean-Louis Piérot, known in France for his collaborations with artists Étienne Daho, Alain Bashung and Jane Birkin. Looking back, I find it crazy to realize the extent to which music can unite people we don’t know and for whom we have great admiration.”
Beyries is preparing to tour until the fall. “I want to bring the fruits of five years of great collaboration and work to the stage. At the moment I'm not thinking about a fourth album. In general, I try not to project too much into the future,” she says.

Canadian Cancer Society Ambassador
The singer, a cancer survivor, will be an ambassador for the fundraiser organized by the Canadian Cancer Society in March. “For my part, my health is good, but I was really lucky. I myself have benefited from a research protocol in my treatments and want to work to improve people's lives. Thanks to research in recent years, the life expectancy and quality of life of people with a serious cancer diagnosis are better than they were 5 or 10 years ago. For this reason, I plan to participate in the next fundraiser.” For more information, visit cancer.ca.
