This new encounter with poetry in Medellín “is a new attempt to wrest the city from the hands of death, from crude mercantilism and from the pragmatic path that has misled our people for so many years, for democratic freedoms, social changes etc.” complete peace.
During the celebration of this poetic festival, 93 activities will take place during the two-week journey through the city, seven virtual performances and 86 face-to-face events.
“Never has a people been as sensitive, profound and aware of the value of poetry as ours during the days of this festival, considered the largest in the world,” said Fernando Rendón, Founder and Director of the Medellín International Poetry Festival since its inception . in 1991.
At the same time, from July 13th to 18th, 2023, the first congress of the World Poetry Movement will take place in Medellín and Caracas with the participation of about 80 delegates, both in person and virtually.
The Congress will receive the reports of the delegates from the different continents, prepare and draft a strategic plan for 2023-2028 and elect a coordinating committee.
The festival began and grew as a grand act of resistance to death in a city isolated from violence and war for decades. For this reason it was awarded the Alternative Nobel Prize in 2006 and recognized as a cultural heritage of a nation.
