Mediaset appoints Carlos Franganillo to lead Telecinco’s new news venture

Mediaset continues its changes to give a twist to its information commitment. After the signing of Francisco Moreno as new news director in October after his successful time at Canary Islands regional television, now comes one of the changes of the year: Carlos Franganillo moves from RTVE to Telecinco, as El Diario expected And this newspaper was able to do this from sources of Alessandro Salem Confirm led group. Franganillo had become one of the most recognizable faces and a reference in the news of the public institution, first as a correspondent and then during his time at Telediario 2, where he arrived in September 2018 to secure a place in the audience, a job that In 2019 he received, among other things, an Iris Prize from the Television Academy and an Ondas Prize.

In January, Franganillo will succeed Pedro Piqueras, who will retire from the screen at the end of the year “by his own decision, communicated and agreed with the company months ago,” according to reports from the group. Piqueras is thus ending a career that he has built up over the last 17 years at Mediaset.

The 43-year-old’s move from Madrid to Telecinco, where he will face team leader Vicente Vallés on Antena 3 and whoever takes up his baton on La 1 on weekday evenings, complements Mediaset’s new bet on Spain for his Information services that include the renovation of the set and the restoration of Noticias Cuatro from January. For now, Ana Roldán, Franganillo’s usual deputy, will take over the management of Telediario 2 from this Monday, since the journalist is on vacation these days, explains TVE. The public body assures this newspaper that it has not yet been decided whether the presenter will return to the screen before his move to Mediaset and who will be the person who will permanently succeed him in the evening news program of La 1.

Restore audience

This reinforcement of information in Mediaset is one of the banners of the new management of the group, which is undergoing a major audience crisis that has caused it to lose first place in the monthly rankings and is currently behind Antena 3 and La 1 and none 10th place achieved % average screen share. While waiting for these changes to be implemented, the Mediaset channel reached a minimum over the summer. Francisco Moreno joins the group after Canary Islands television’s coverage of the eruption of the La Palma volcano, which did not skimp on innovative technological resources, attracted media attention around the world and won awards such as the Premio Ondas 2021 and the National 2022 won television award. Now Franganillo is the main face of this revolution in Mediaset news.

The journalist holds a degree in audiovisual communication from the University of Nebrija and in journalism from the University of CEU San Pablo. In 2008, after a selection test, he moved to RTVE and soon moved to the editorial team of Internacional, where he reported on various events as a special envoy. However, he got his start on TVE’s Breakfasts, a program that, as he confessed in 2019, toughened him up and was “an intensive TV course”. In 2011, he began working as a correspondent for the information service of Spanish television in Moscow, where he reported, among other things, on the overthrow of the government of Viktor Yanukovych, the occupation and annexation of Crimea, and the armed uprisings in Donetsk and Luhansk. He also served as special envoy to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Japan, where he reported on the tsunami. In July 2014, he took over the position of TVE correspondent in Washington, succeeding Lorenzo Milá, and four years later returned to Spain to present the second edition of Telediario. Since then he has also been responsible for informative specials at various national and international election events.

“You have to take chamomile from time to time. Communication discourses can be very toxic. The media has lost its grip, technology has changed the way we consume information and in some ways some are running amok in pursuit of viewers or readers. I’m not criticizing it, I’m describing it. Many see a way out by standing in a ditch. It is a very toxic dynamic,” he said in an interview in EL PAÍS in 2021, when asked about the vortex in which he lived day after day.

A self-confessed fan of tortillas and the use of social networks, Franganillo assured in 2021 that he does not see the news as a way to move up the RTVE organizational chart. “I can well imagine that I will go back to writing stories,” he said. That plan will have to wait for now.
