Ukrainian oligarch friend’s royal romance confiscated by Putin in Croatia: worth $200 million
Her name is Royal Romance, she is 92.5 meters long, a $200 million superyacht and owned by Viktor Medvedchuk, a Ukrainian oligarch who is friends with Vladimir Putin.
Soon this yacht will be auctioned off from Kyiv after being seized in Croatia and transferred to the Ukrainian government’s ownership. According to the Ukrainian government, a Croatian court will hand over the boat to the Ukrainian asset management agency to preserve its economic value by auctioning it off.
It would be the first time an oligarch’s sanctioned assets have been handed over to Ukrainian authorities.
Medvedchuk was arrested in Ukraine in April and extradited to Russia in a prisoner exchange in September.
In September, another superyacht seized by a sanctioned Russian oligarch, Dmitry Pumpyansky, was auctioned for $37.5 million to an unknown buyer, the first such sale since Russia invaded Ukraine. However, the proceeds did not end up in the coffers of the Ukrainian government, but went to the US investment bank JP Morgan to repay a debt taken on by the oligarch Pumpyansky himself.
