Ryan added: “Playing with Billy was effortless.” The characters just came to life. And I just meet him. I don’t know. How could you not love Billy Crystal?’

She continued: “Of course Harry is a very broad character, harmful, insensitive and terrified of commitment.”

“But if you take out all of Harry’s faults, if you stand underneath them, then it’s pure Billy. And what he brings to all his characters is heart,” she added.

“Harry is his heart because Billy listens to him, and as his wife Janice has known for over 50 years, it’s pretty easy to fall in love with Billy,” Ryan said.

When Harry Met Sally director Rob Reiner was also in attendance, he revealed that Crystal herself had written his mother’s famous line.

“Billy wrote what I think is the funniest line in all of film history.” I take the same view as her. “That’s what my mother said,” Reiner said.

Whoopi Goldberg was also in attendance at the ceremony and brought Crystal to tears when she mentioned the late, great Robin Williams.

Other honorees at the ceremony included opera and theater soprano Renée Fleming; British singer-songwriter and member of the Bee Gees, Barry Gibb; rapper, singer and actress Queen Latifah; and singer Dionne Warwick.
