Megan McCain: Judge Jackson’s refusal to define ‘woman’ exposes the absurdity of identity politics

I want to start this column by saying that I believe the best way for Americans to overcome our most difficult political and cultural divisions is to treat each other with empathy, empathy, and respect.

Of course, this feeling extends to the transgender community as well.

But the reality is that the progressive left’s stubbornness in imposing extreme views on gender and sexuality on the rest of the country has left many of us embarrassed and downright scared to talk about it.

The evidence for this was fully demonstrated in the Supreme Court confirmation hearing of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson.

Judge Jackson is not the candidate I would have preferred because I am a conservative and pro-life sentence.

However, Democrats control the Senate and the White House, and Judge Jackson’s judicial record, education, and reputation demonstrate that she is qualified to sit on the nation’s highest court.

In fact, according to a new Gallup poll, 58% of Americans would like the Senate to confirm her candidacy.

This is the second highest level of public support ever recorded for a candidate. In 2005, the candidacy of John Roberts received 59% support.

Thankfully, the hearing was stripped of much of the soap opera melodrama of Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s hearings that tore the country in half.

And Justice Jackson is on her way to becoming the first African-American woman to sit on the Supreme Court. This should be noted for its historical value.

According to a new Gallup poll, 58% of Americans would like the Senate to approve Judge Jackson (above right).

I expect I will probably be pissed off by many of her future judgments, but then again, that’s how the process works.

With all that said, Judge Jackson is undoubtedly an intelligent woman, perhaps a brilliant woman, which is why I was surprised and disappointed when Judge Jackson refused to answer Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn when asked to define the word “woman.”

In a truly dizzying moment, Judge Jackson said she couldn’t answer that question because she was “not a biologist.”

I don’t entirely blame Judge Jackson for this completely ridiculous statement. I am sure that the judge was taught not to get into politicized issues, among which gender has become one of the most controversial.

But the harsh reality is that we are now in a position in American society where a candidate for the Supreme Court cannot tell if women are real or not.

If you cannot define something, it does not exist.

Senator Ted Cruz also elaborated on this in his interrogation.

“Let me ask you, as a judge, how would you determine if a plaintiff has the right under Article 3 to challenge a gender rule, position, policy without being able to determine what a woman is?” he asked.

“I know I’m a woman, I know Senator Blackburn is a woman,” Judge Jackson said.

“And the woman I admire most in the world is in the room tonight—my mother,” she concluded, obviously evasive.

Make no mistake, progressives and weak Democrats are to blame for this absurd moment, whose silence allowed ultra-left extremists to join their party.

As a feminist, I was amazed.

I also have a little girl that I have to prepare to become strong and take on a world that is still controlled by men and patriarchy.

What should I tell her?

While I don’t think we’re defined by our unchanging characteristics, I do believe there’s something special about being a woman.

We have certain life experiences that help define us. And if a biological man can become a biological woman, where are we left?

Because make no mistake, that’s the whole point. According to progressive extremists, biological sex is not fixed.

But this leads to a contradiction that these progressives must sort out.

They can’t play smart and stupid at the same time.

President Biden appointed Judge Jackson in part because she is African American.

This is the same excuse that led Biden to choose Kamala Harris as his running mate.

It was a promise that Biden made to the American public and African American women in America that helped send him to the White House.

If Judge Jackson were a man, she wouldn’t be in the nomination process right now. Full stop.

Is it important to be a woman or not?

Are women a separate group of people or are we not?

Is the unique life experience of women important or not?

Hillary Clinton’s supporters promoted the historic nature of her candidacy because she would be our first female president.

If a biological man can become a biological woman, then what is so special about femininity?

The Democratic Party, which so easily engages in identity politics and prints “Nevertheless, it persisted” on mugs, shirts and bumper stickers, must find an answer.

I fully expect that the question “Can you define the word ‘woman'” will be asked to every high-level politician and every presidential debate in the future.

Perhaps it is because progressives have come to realize that human beings are not entirely defined by their identity.

Maybe we’re actually people who don’t fit into clear categories.

It may be more important to appoint a qualified judge than a woman judge. And that also goes for choosing a vice president or electing a president for that matter.

Judge Jackson’s ridiculous refusal to state the obvious is the end result of arrogant elites deciding among themselves how society should work and then imposing their beliefs on the rest of America with no regard for the real world consequences.

Democratic Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin flippantly dismissed the hype surrounding gender and others as “culture war theories.”

He is right about one thing: a culture war is raging in America.

But Durbin is fooling himself if he thinks his party isn’t going to pay the price at the polls for the mess they’ve created.
