Megan McCain: Media complicity in censoring Hunter Biden’s laptop story is a betrayal

Too often, those who work in the media choose a side – either Republican or Democrat.

They embrace events and scandals that make their side look good and ignore those that make their team look bad.

Of course, it goes both ways.

But the utterly stunning journalistic malpractice committed by the media in their coverage of Hunter Biden’s laptop goes far beyond anything we’ve seen so far.

This is the most egregious example of media favoritism I have ever seen and betrayal of American society.

Frankly, the vast majority of the American public has lost faith in journalistic institutions, and I don’t entirely blame them, even if my heart is broken by it.

On Thursday, the New York Times published an article that was like a bombshell.

In the article, Gray Lady reporters reported that Hunter took out a loan in late 2022 to pay off nearly $1 million in tax liabilities amid a wide-ranging federal investigation.

Hunter’s alleged tax evasion is just a small part of a grand jury investigation into his finances, which is all about allegations that he traded his name and political connections to make millions of dollars overseas.

Not to mention, there are credible claims that his father, our President Joe Biden, was also involved in and profiting from these shady deals.

The Times reported that “The investigation, which began as a tax investigation under the Obama administration, expanded in 2018 to include possible criminal tax violations as well as foreign lobbying and money laundering rules, according to people familiar with the investigation. .’

It’s a full mouth. But that’s not all.

When The New York Post ran an article about Hunter Biden during the election, it was censored by Twitter and Facebook in accordance with their disinformation policy.

Tucked away in about two dozen paragraphs, this shocking report contains another huge article that honestly deserves its own headline.

Hunter Biden’s laptop is real.

You heard right!

This laptop is a laptop from hell.

Much of the New York Times reporting is actually based on emails pulled from Hunter Biden’s laptop.

The laptop that almost every blue tick on Twitter told us about was fake news.

Jen Psaki even once tweeted a Politico op-ed titled “Hunter Biden story is Russian disinformation, dozens of former intelligence officials say.” And almost every major media outlet has taken this Politico story and spread it.

And now let’s all remember October 2020, the height of the presidential election campaign.

The New York Post reported exclusively on the contents of a computer that Hunter allegedly left at a Delaware repair shop in April 2019.

The laptop’s hard drive held a veritable treasure trove of evidence of moral corruption, including pornography and drug use.

Before I continue, I want to make it crystal clear that I sympathize with Hunter.

It’s not an easy path to have a family in politics, and as someone who has many friends and family who have struggled with addiction and addiction, I commend him for getting sober and conquering so many of his demons.

I believe that there is a strong stigma around addiction and addiction in our country that only exacerbates this crisis and can bring gloom and pain to those who suffer.

I don’t want any of this for him and I don’t want to and don’t intend to embarrass or criticize him for being sick.

My own mother shares this illness and truly is one of the strongest women in the entire world and a beacon of hope and example to many of what life on the other side of addiction can look like.

With all that, I believed the laptop and its contents were fair game while Biden ran for office, just as the Trump kids’ shady and seemingly shady business dealings were fair game during Trump’s tenure.

Hunter’s laptop contained emails, text messages, photos, and financial documents detailing how he used his political influence to make money.

In one April 2014 email cited by the New York Times, Hunter talks about how the announcement of his father’s upcoming trip to Ukraine as vice president could have a positive impact on his business deals with energy company Burisma.

These emails are now reportedly playing a central role in the Hunter investigation.

The New York Times even bothered to get the laptop materials for itself and — shock — found that there were people who could authenticate them.

So what the hell are they taking so long!

My employer and this news site, , hired cyber-forensic experts to verify the authenticity of the contents of a laptop—more than a year ago.

So what has changed between the time of this New York Times report and the New York Post and Daily Mail?

Nothing really, except that Biden is now president and the walls could close around Hunter.

Ignoring this story is bad enough, but the media and Big Tech didn’t stop there. They also suppressed and crushed history.

When The New York Post ran an article about Hunter Biden during the election, it was censored by Twitter and Facebook in accordance with their disinformation policy.

(Note that the New York Times article is not censored on any of these platforms today.)

National Public Radio didn’t report the story at all, and shamefully, it belonged to them.

“We don’t want to waste time on stories that aren’t really stories,” NPR news managing editor Terence Samuel said at the time, “and we don’t want to waste listeners and readers time on stories that are just distractions… that was… politically motivated event, and we decided to treat it that way.”

You might think that professional journalists would be a little more curious.

You are wrong.

Think about it hypothetically: if I or Jenna Bush, Chelsea Clinton or Barron Trump were involved in foreign business deals, it would cause alarm in the media.

Why did the media give Hunter a pass?

One of the most incredible stories, based on material extracted from a hard drive and detailed in Miranda Devine’s book A Laptop from Hell, is that Hunter received a 3.16-carat diamond for $80,000 as payment from a Chinese mogul. .

Um… red flag?

The media treated Hunter like a child who is not responsible for his behavior.

Why? I think the answer is obvious – they wanted his father to win the election.

Hunter even admitted in an interview that the laptop might be his, and this was met with a shrug by the collective media.

“Maybe my laptop was stolen,” he told CBS News while promoting his memoir Beautiful Things. “Perhaps I was hacked.” Maybe it was…that it was Russian intelligence.

One of the most embarrassing manifestations of media deafness is an article by New York Times columnist Ben Smith titled “Disinformation Wars Within.”

Smith is best known for making the decision to release the only recent verified disinformation, the Christopher Steele dossier, while he was editor-in-chief of Buzzfeed.

Proof of Smith’s scientific rubbish about “fake news” was Hunter Biden’s laptop saga.

“The laptop story was an old-fashioned, politically motivated campaign of dirty tricks,” Smith wrote.

“While some emails believed to be on the laptop have since been identified as genuine by at least one recipient, the younger Mr. Biden said he did not know if the laptop in question belonged to him,” he continued.

Wow, this is some damn bad detective work.

As I said, guerrillas ignoring bad news are not new.

What’s new is the complicity of the media in the cover-up, and in doing so they are causing festering rot between our journalistic establishments and the American public.

The media treated Hunter like a child who is not responsible for his behavior. Why? I think the answer is obvious - they wanted his father to win the election.

When I worked in corporate media during the 2020 election, presentation meetings were hesitant to even mention anything related to Hunter Biden, which was a clear change in tone and attitude on the part of the Trump kids.

I have hundreds of examples of sheer media bias that I have seen and experienced.

I can assure you in all sincerity that the corporate media is pro-Democratic and this is a blatant ethical issue.

They flush their reputation down the toilet.

The New York Times, corporate media and Big Tech apologize to The Daily Mail, The New York Post and Fox News.

Now that the New York Times has acknowledged that the report was real, legitimate, and accurate despite widespread conspiratorial ignorance, shouldn’t we take another look at how and why we get our news sources from these people?

But don’t look at me when first asked me to join the team, one of the things I liked about the site was their willingness to publish stories that the vast majority of the mainstream media were too scared or biased to do, including Hunter’s laptop Biden.
