Megyn Kelly collapses on air after she shared a serious accident that left her child in intensive care

Megyn Kelly collapsed on air after sharing the serious accident her son Thatcher was involved in, which sent him to intensive care with internal bleeding from lacerations to his spleen.

During Monday’s Sirius XM podcast, “The Megyn Kelly Show,” Kelly opened up on the show and spoke about how people noticed she was gone on Thursday and Friday the previous week, before sharing that her “little guy,” Thatcher , “something happened”. their 8-year-old son while the family went skiing in Montana. It starts at minute 1:22.

“Thank God he’s fine so let me start the lead,” Kelly shared, noting that Thatcher is a good skier and was on an advanced run when the accident happened. “And did a good run. … But was inspired by this cavernous structure, on the run to check it out.”

The former Fox News host said her son has been to a place with his instructor where people like to “walk up… and take a little break.” The hostess shared that it was at the end of the day, her son was tired and “didn’t seem to have the strength to make the climb”.

“And he fell,” Kelly shared, explaining when she received a call from her husband Doug that Thatcher had to be hospitalized. “And I’m getting in the ambulance. He seems fine. He says he fell ten feet and landed on some rocks while hiking up that part of the mountain. But he has an IV.”

She said at the time she was wondering what was going on and the rescue crew said it was “protocol” as there was an internal injury. Kelly said she questioned the person further, and they said it was warranted given that he had fallen on rocks and the “pain he was complaining of.”

“So we come to the hospital and they say they need to do some tests,” the host recounted of how an abdominal ultrasound was done first and nothing came. Then she said the hospital did a CT scan…” and lo and behold, there was internal bleeding.”

“And he had lacerations, had two severe lacerations on his spleen and a third that they couldn’t determine the size of,” she added. “So, three tears from his spleen… and he was bleeding internally and they said you need to go to a more serious hospital now.”

She said they got back in the ambulance, drove to the other hospital and “put him in intensive care,” and she said at that point she wondered what the hell was going on. Kelly said a very nice nurse finally sat her down and explained that the tears in his spleen were “very heavy” and that there was a good chance he was going to lose his spleen. The host said the surgeon came in and said he hoped Thatcher wouldn’t “lose his spleen” but if the “bleeding persists” they would take it.

At that point, Kelly and Doug turned to their doctors back home for advice on what to do, admitting they didn’t know what to do. Their doctor said without question that they were advised “not to lose the spleen” and told them they could have other options instead.

The hospital said it was a level 3 trauma center, not a level 1 trauma center, and at one point they got suggestions to order a paramedic to transport him to a level 1 trauma center with a pediatrician or at least one.” interventional radiologist,” which she said was needed to “repair the spleen.”

“Our surgeon said, ‘Don’t move him … he has to be in ICU, he has to be in the hospital bed,'” Kelly shared. “‘And he’s not even allowed to get up and go to the bathroom. He can’t get out of bed.’ Because the bleeding won’t stop. We don’t want him to lose his spleen. If there’s a fix of any kind, we’d love to do that. But it’s not safe to move him. We are reviewing the Med-Evac flights.”

They decided not to transfer him, and the trauma center found an interventional radiologist who wasn’t a pediatrician, but if things “went wrong,” that person would be there. After a few more scary moments things settled down and he got better. After six days, the former NBC host said her son needed to leave the hospital and go home.

Then Kelly broke down during her show and got emotional about the traumatic experience her entire family went through.

“You know the amount of stress and the love you have for your kids,” Kelly said tearfully. “And the fragility of these little bodies that are completely dependent on you. And you know the tremendous responsibility you have for their well-being to make big decisions. And how important family and friends are, and good colleagues.”

She grabbed a tissue and dabbed at her eyes, explaining that she was thinking about the saying a guest once mentioned to her – that the only thing in life that matters is “within 15 feet of you” – and she said she found that true as she thanked her audience for the “connection” that she said was “precious” to her too.
