‘If I change my hair, I change who I am’: Mel B reveals she refused to straighten her natural curls after the stylist asked her to at the wannabe shoot

Mel B has revealed she refused to straighten her natural curls while filming the Wannabe video because she wanted to embrace “who she was”.

The 47-year-old singer claimed a stylist on the 1996 set wanted her to add warmth to her Afro hair, which would have quashed her Caribbean heritage and “individual style”.

In a new interview with The Sunday Times Style, she said of the Spice Girls’ debut single: “The stylist at the Wannabe shoot asked me to fix it, but I said no.

“My hair is a part of me. If I change my hair, I change who I am.”

Discussing each bandmate’s unique image, she added, “We didn’t want to dress like the others. We came into the group with our individual sense of style.”

Mel, along with Geri Horner, Emma Bunton, Melanie C and Victoria Beckham, watched the pop track catapult the group to worldwide fame upon its release.

It was revealed last month that the Spice Girls were on the verge of an amazing comeback deal – to headline Glastonbury.

Music industry sources said talks are well advanced, raising questions about whether Victoria – Posh Spice – will attend Worthy Farm’s mud fest next year.

The fashion designer has repeatedly snubbed band reunions and the last time she performed with them was at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics.

A source said: “Negotiations are ongoing but they have reached a stage where things are looking really likely, with or without Victoria.

“The Spice Girls aren’t a band that usually plays Glastonbury, but they’re legendary and it’s going to be so much fun.”

Earlier this summer, Mel dropped a big hint that the girls were set to be reunited amid the 25th anniversary of Wannabe.

Not only did she join the band to celebrate the anniversary of their first song, but she also fueled speculation that they would take the stage again, as she wrote in another post, “We WILL be back and this is mine ‘scary’ promise!”
