‘I won’t be able to perform anymore’: Mel C cancels New Year’s Eve gig in Poland due to ‘issues that don’t align with the communities I support’

Mel C pulled the plug on a New Year’s Eve performance in Poland after discovering a conflict with her personal views.

The Spice Girl, 48, had planned to give a New Year’s gig for the Polish state broadcaster.

But Sporty Spice canceled the show due to issues at odds with their own values.

This appears to be indicative of Poland’s laws and attitudes towards the LGBTQ+ community.

Mel took to her Instagram Stories on Monday to break the bad news to her followers, without going into too much detail as to why she was no longer willing to perform.

She wrote: “Given some issues that have been brought to my attention and that are not consistent with the communities I support, I am afraid that I will no longer be able to perform in Poland on New Year’s Eve as planned.”

She added: “I hope to be back there very soon. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas and best wishes for 2023.”

It is believed that the issues the singer was referring to were Poland’s record on equality and gay rights.

The country has not recognized same-sex marriage, and Poland has also banned LGBTQ+ gatherings in some areas.

However, Mel C has been a staunch supporter of the LGBTQ+ community in the past, even winning an honorary gay award at the Attitude Awards.

When she performed at Brighton Pride in 2019, she was praised as she took the stage with a pink, white and blue striped flag.

She said at the time: “I’ve proudly held the Pride flag wherever I go, very proud.

“But tonight one of my dancers gave me this very special flag and I’m going to hold it tonight when I sing my next song.

“It’s a flag we don’t see often enough. This is a flag we want to see a lot more of. This is for trans and non-binary [people].’

It comes after her bandmate Victoria Beckham’s husband was hit with a wave of criticism over his decision to be ambassador to Qatar during the World Cup, despite the country’s terrible human rights record.

Mel herself said she would never accept such a deal, telling the Chron: “Personally, I’m an ally of the LGBTQ+ community and wouldn’t feel comfortable with it.

“People want to go there and help make a difference. To each their own, but it would be a no from me if the offer came along.”
