Melendy: "My grandfather was Cuban from Camaguey"

the spanish singer Melendi He says he has always had a special relationship with Cubans, which he believes is due to his heritage, as his paternal grandfather was from Cuba Camagueyalthough he didn’t know him.

Melendi, who will be performing in Florida as part of her February 26th and March 9th tour “Likes and Scars”told in a recent interview with Diario Las Américas how he’s had this unique feeling for Cuba ever since he first traveled to Miami.

“There’s something bigger than all of us and it’s obvious. I’ve been coming to Miami for years. And ever since I set foot here, I’ve noticed that something is happening in Cuba. My grandfather is Cuban from Camaguey, but I never met him.”the artist said in statements to the aforementioned medium.

Melendi says both he and his father were born in Asturias, but he says he grew up in an “Indiana home”.

“Over there, that’s what the houses are called that are built the same way as those in Cuba, but we have them in northern Spain. My great-uncles always talked about Cuba. I’ve always been in this notion. And as I entered Miami, I realized that there is a special connection with Cubans.”he added.

The 44-year-old musician also spoke about the spontaneous creation of his song. “Bread for Yolanda”a song of which he was very proud and which he performed together with the Cuban Aymee Nuviola.

Melendi called the song an “island” because it wasn’t part of a project. It happened about five or six months ago when he went to work in Miami with his music director, who is Cuban. He says that everything happened very quickly. At a meeting some verses came out and as a result of those verses they pulled the thread.

“A song has emerged that we believe addresses a very sensitive subject from a beautiful perspective‘ he commented.

He says that he only met Pablo Milanés by sight to say hello because they lived 15 minutes apart, but that he never spoke to him, which he says he would have loved.

In addition to “Pan para Yolanda”, Melendi already showed his affection for Cuba in the song “Since We Been Together” and in the collaboration of 2018 with Orishas in “Sastre de tu amor”.

In 2021, during a concert in Miami, the Spaniard mentioned his special bond with Cuba and the public reacted “Home and life!” calls, in which the singer latched on.

The Spanish singer will perform at the Miami-Dade Arena on February 26th and March 9th. Both presentations are part of a tour that will take him to a post-pandemic reunion with his audiences in the United States, Latin America.
