Meloni is disappointed with her government’s performance in combating illegal migration. “I expected more with immigration policy. We worked hard, but the results are not what we expected,” she said in an interview with Rai 1 on Saturday evening.
“Migration is a very complex issue, but I am sure we will be able to control it”, guaranteed Meloni. Italy has now become “more credible and stable” from a political point of view and has been more heard on the international stage, said the right-wing populist.
“There’s a lot to do”
“Italy was at the bottom of Europe, but today it is growing more than any other European country,” said Meloni. She was convinced that she would remain in office for a full five-year legislative term. During this period, she intends to carry out the major reforms that Italy needs, including fiscal and judicial reform. “There is still a lot to do, but we will fulfill our commitments”, assured the leader of the right-wing party “Fratelli d’Italia” (Brothers of Italy).
Meloni’s right-wing coalition won parliamentary elections a year ago with 44 percent of the vote, which was enough for a comfortable majority in parliament. His party won 26 percent of the vote, three times more than Lega allies Matteo Salvini and Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia. This allowed Meloni to become the first female prime minister in Italian history in October, ahead of a right-wing majority.
