Meloni works at a conference for the reconstruction of Ukraine

After her trip to Ukraine on Tuesday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is working on an Italian-Ukrainian summit where government officials in Rome and Kiev are expected to discuss reconstruction plans.

The conference is scheduled to take place in Rome at the end of April, Roman daily Il Messaggero reported. Meloni expects the protective shield of the EU for the summit.

Meloni was due to attend the summit in Rome with his Ukrainian counterpart Denys Schmyhal. Italian companies want to play a leading role in the reconstruction of Ukraine. Meloni had already stressed this during his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday.

Italy comes into play

Italian companies want to play a role above all in the logistics sector. The newspaper reported that they want to participate in the reconstruction of airports in Ukraine. They are also willing to provide prefabricated housing and bomb disposal solutions.

Right-wing politician Meloni had previously supported arms deliveries to Ukraine before winning the election last September. On the other hand, his two coalition partners – Matteo Salvini of the right-wing Lega and Silvio Berlusconi of the conservative Forza Italia – have repeatedly made pro-Russian statements.
