Thirty members of the Representative Assembly of the Council of the Republic, the independence organization led by Carles Puigdemont from Brussels, have issued a letter criticizing the “unilateral actions” of the government of this organization, but above all due to the “authoritarian tendency” of its number two, Toni Comín.
The Council of the Republic currently consists of the Assembly of Representatives – a kind of parallel parliament – and the government of the Council itself, and is tasked with spreading the sovereignty process abroad. In order to streamline and improve its functioning, Puigdemont has now proposed removing powers from the assembly, which would become a bicameral parliament, and giving the powers to members so that they can directly elect the president. In August, some members of the Consell de la República’s internal political action commission protested in front of the former president to express their opposition to his decision to dissolve the elected assembly and give more power to the executive organization he leads.
Now, in an open letter addressed to Puigdemont entitled “Who is disturbing the Representative Assembly”, thirty members of this Assembly have decided “to raise their voices to publicly denounce the unilateral actions and measures taken by the Council Government to the detriment of Puigdemont. “ our Chamber.” The signatories make it clear that they understand the “complexity of the exile situation” and criticize the position of the Vice-President of the Council, Toni Comín, by “insisting that the Assembly must adhere to the guidelines of the Council Government, a dissenting position.” in any parliamentary system. Serious”. They also warn that the Council government has “unfortunately” “acted against the Assembly” with “interference, obstructions and contempt”, in an “authoritarian tendency” that they particularly Attribute Comín.
“Unfortunately,” they add, “the presence and actions of Toni Comín, who has had a very erratic political career in some of today’s Spanish parties and is motivated by the promotion of personal interests, endangers this vital project. With every day that passes with him in a key position, we fear that the Council’s project could be marked by mistrust, arbitrariness and obsolescence.” That is why they call on Puigdemont to “restore the founding spirit” of the Council, a “modern, participatory one and democratic structure” and not “the pyramidal and autocratic structure that Comín proposes”.
Puigdemont founded the Consell de la República after deciding to open an international front to defend Catalan independence. According to his plan, the Consell would act as a paragovernment outside Catalonia, awaiting secession and protecting the roadmap to independence. However, mistrust between secessionist forces has frustrated its work and the ERC remains on the sidelines.
